Our Community’s Civic Theatre

Originally built in 1927, the Carolina Theatre at Belk Place in Uptown Charlotte is being lovingly restoredbto its original splendor and will soon serve as a dynamic civic hub.

The Carolina Theatre will be the centerpiece of the Belk Place civic campus, and is adjacent to FFTC’s headquarters in the Luski-Gorelick Center for Philanthropy. (hotlink to Luski-Gorelick Center)

The 36,000-square- foot historic theatre was once a thriving movie palace that also hosted acts such as Bob Hope, Katherine Hepburn and Elvis Presley. FFTC is now working to restore the long-vacant Carolina Theatre to its original grandeur and to create a vital civic engagement space. Construction is currently underway.

Programming at the theatre will include speakers, community engagement events, town hall meetings, arts and entertainment, films and more. The theatre will operate under the name Carolina Theatre at Belk Place to honor the family that has modeled civic ideals for decades and helped make this project possible.
