Legacy Reflects Spirit of Venture Philanthropist

Robert E. (Bob) Elberson

Foundation For The Carolinas is deeply committed to helping individuals, nonprofits and businesses achieve their philanthropic goals and nurturing those intentions in perpetuity. A shining example of extraordinary commitment to our region is Robert E. (Bob) Elberson, who passed away in early 2013. Bob’s lengthy career included serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of both Hanes Corporation and Sara Lee Corporation.

In partnership with his son Charlie, a local attorney and FFTC staff, Bob created the Reemprise Fund in 2005, an FFTC Donor Advised Fund that invests in innovative and entrepreneurial projects from non-profit organizations to produce significant human returns. Bob worked closely with us to establish a planned gift that will fund a competitive grant program for the Reemprise Fund, fully managed by FFTC and in partnership with Charlie and his sister Ann.

Since its inception, the Reemprise Fund has provided around $700,000 in transformative grants to an array of arts, education and health and human service organizations. Reemprise is uniquely focused on initiatives that create and grow individual ingenuity and ability. Optimally, its investments help empower enterprises that will, through human initiative, become self-sustaining.

When it comes to imagining the potential good of well-placed faith, Bob has always been a visionary. His extraordinary commitment to emerging initiatives and organizations will expand greatly due to his generous bequest. Grant awards will be made in partnership with Bob’s son Charlie and daughter Ann. Charlie, an active member of the Robinson Center for Civic Leadership, believes the money available for grants through Reemprise will “foster the spirit of entrepreneurship, extend our reach and ultimately create change in the broader community.”

“Dad was always ahead of his time,” said Charlie. “Foundation For The Carolinas has given us a way to meet his intentions today and establish a blueprint that will honor them in perpetuity. Without our partnership with FFTC, we could never have fully realized his vision and legacy.”

By leaving this generous planned gift, and taking an innovative approach to venture philanthropy, Bob Elberson will undoubtedly inspire others to share in his vision for years to come.
