Cultural Facilities & Endowments
Foundation For The Carolinas was one of four organizations that funded the development of a Cultural Facilities Master Plan. Adopted in 2004, the plan established a vision for future development of cultural facilities in Charlotte-Mecklenburg and was directed by a 130-member Blue Ribbon Committee of stakeholders. The Arts & Science Council, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Charlotte City Center Partners also funded the plan.
On occasion, Foundation For The Carolinas participates in civic leadership activities when gaps occur in existing leadership structures, as was the case soon after the publication of the Master Plan. In order to help move the plan to an implementation phase, the Foundation came forward with a proposal to finance a selected number of cultural facilities and the necessary endowment to strengthen the cultural sector.
Additionally, Foundation For The Carolinas helped secure the participation of Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis and former Wachovia CEO Ken Thompson as co-chairs of the $83 million private sector campaign. The private sector support will fund the endowment component of the public private partnership.
The endowments created by this campaign are held by The Greater Charlotte Cultural Trust, a supporting organization of Foundation For The Carolinas.
