The 2012 Foundation For The Carolinas Annual Meeting was held March 8 at the Charlotte Convention Center. A record crowd of 1,550 community leaders from business, nonprofits, education, government and the arts gathered to pay tribute to philanthropy and civic engagement in our region.
Foundation Governing Board Chair Catherine P. Bessant gave welcoming remarks, encouraging guests to take inspiration from the program. Foundation leaders Michael Marsicano and Laura Meyer Wellman reported on the activities and performance of the Foundation over the past year. Among stories of generous donors and civic leadership projects, they made the exciting announcement that more than $1 billion has been distributed to nonprofits through the Foundation since its inception.
Keynote speaker for the luncheon was Sir Ken Robinson, an internationally recognized leader in the development of education, creativity and innovation. Robinson spoke about the need for a more individualized approach to education to foster an innovative community, capable of addressing the challenges of the 21st century.
