The Cleveland County Community Foundation was established in 1985 to increase the charitable giving resources in Cleveland County. From its first contribution of $5,000 from George Blanton to create a community endowment, the Cleveland County Community Foundation has grown into a philanthropic organization managing 29 funds with total charitable assets of $2.1 million by the end of 2009. The Cleveland County Community Foundation was the very first affiliate of Foundation For The Carolinas.
More than 23 years ago, George Blanton made a gift to establish Cleveland County Community Foundation to benefit the people of Cleveland County. This gift was quickly followed by a $50,000 fund established under the Cleveland County Community Foundation by the United Way of Cleveland County for the charitable purposes of the agencies of the United Way of Cleveland County.
The Foundation strives to educate the people of Cleveland County about the functionality of a community foundation and how the organization benefits the entire county through the charitable actions of donors and volunteers. The activities of the Cleveland County Community Foundation include building a general endowment (the earnings of which provide program grants for nonprofits within the county), helping nonprofit organizations build endowments and assisting individual donors in establishing their own charitable giving programs.
The Cleveland County Community Foundation currently advises a community endowment managed by Foundation For The Carolinas. This fund provides annual grantmaking dollars to support community needs as determined by the board. As a permanently endowed fund, the intent is to maintain and grow the principal balance and produce grantmaking dollars in perpetuity.
Our footprint in this community is also due in part to the The Hoyt Keeter Fund which was formed from Mr. Keeter’s estate. Since its inception in 1997, the Cleveland County Community Foundation board receives a portion of the spendable income of this fund, allowing the board to award grants to organization serving the indigent in Cleveland County.
