Critical Need Response Fund

Final Distributions Totaling $127,170 Awarded April 16

Since December 2, 2008, nearly $2.7 million was raised for the Mecklenburg Critical Need Response Fund, a short-term initiative designed to raise and distribute funds through the winter to shelter, feed, clothe and keep warm those in need. Donations have ranged from $1 given by a four-year-old child to $1 million, the initial gift from the Leon Levine Foundation to seed the Fund. As of April 16, all the funds raised have been awarded in grants to Mecklenburg nonprofit organizations that are struggling to keep up with increased demands owing to the economic crisis.

Since the Fund was created in December, unemployment figures and applications for public assistance have continued to rise as have the numbers of homeless in our community, including more than 2,700 children. The four organizations receiving the final grants will focus on providing services to homeless children in Mecklenburg who are housed in shelters at night and need supervision, food and support during the day while school is out for the summer.
